Is US President Barack Obama an anti-Semite?

This question has lingered in the air since his first presidential bid in 2008. It first arose due to the anti-Semitic sermons that Jeremiah Wright, his pastor for more than 20 years, made as Obama and his family sat in the pews.

Throughout the six-and-a-half years of his presidency, Obama has laughed off the concerns.

But he has not dispelled them. And this failure has hurt him.

So last week, Obama went to significant lengths to answer the question about his feelings toward Israel and the Jewish people once and for all.

The timing of his charm offensive wasn’t coincidental.

Obama clearly believes he has to dispel doubts about his intentions toward Jews and Israel in order to implement the central policy of his second term in office. That policy of course is his nuclear deal with Iran.

Obama’s agreement with the mullahs is supposed to be concluded by the end of next month.

Obama argues that his deal will prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. But as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained in his address before the joint houses of Congress in March, from what has already been revealed about the nuclear deal Obama seeks to conclude, far from preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear arms, the deal will provide several pathways for Iran to at a minimum become a threshold nuclear state, capable of developing nuclear weapons at the drop of a hat. If Iran cheats on the deal, it can develop nuclear weapons while the agreement is still in force. If it abides by the agreement, it can develop nuclear weapons as soon as the agreement expires.

Beyond his desire to conclude a nuclear deal that will empower a regime that has pledged to destroy Israel, there are Obama’s reported plans for changing the way the US relates to Israel at the UN Security Council.

For the past half-century, the US has used its veto power at the Security Council to prevent substantive anti-Israel draft resolutions from passing. But Obama and his top advisers have hinted and media reports have provided details about his intention to end this 50-year policy.

Obama reportedly intends to enable the passage of a French draft resolution that would require Israel to withdraw to the indefensible 1949 armistice lines.

As these two policies, which bear directly on Israel’s ability to defend itself and indeed, to survive, near implementation, Obama is faced with the fact that he has a credibility problem when it comes to issues related to the survival and existence of the Jewish state.

In a bid to address this credibility problem, last week he invested significant time and effort in building up his credibility on Jewish issues. To this end, he gave an extensive interview to Jeffrey Goldberg at The Atlantic, and he gave a speech before Adas Israel, a large, liberal Conservative synagogue in Washington, DC.

To a degree, Obama was successful. He did put to bed the question of whether or not he is anti-Semitic.

In his interview with Goldberg, Obama gave a reasonable if incomplete definition of what anti-Semitism is. Obama said that an anti-Semite is someone who refuses to recognize the 3,000-year connection between the Jews and the Land of Israel. An anti-Semite is also someone who refuses to recognize the long history of persecution that the Jewish people suffered in the Diaspora.

According to Obama, an anti-Semite is someone who refuses to understand that this history of persecution together with the Jews’ millennial connection to the Land of Israel is what justifies the existence of Israel in the Land of Israel.

Moreover, according to Obama, anti-Semites refuse to understand that Israel remains in mortal danger due to the continued existence of anti-Semitic forces that seek its destruction.

And that isn’t all. As he sees it, even if you do understand the legitimacy of Israel’s existence and recognize the continued threats to its survival, you could still be an anti-Semite.

As Obama explained to Goldberg, there is still the problem of double standards.

In his words, “If you acknowledge those things, then you should be able to align yourself with Israel where its security is at stake, you should be able to align yourself with Israel when it comes to making sure that it is not held to a double standard in international fora, you should align yourself with Israel when it comes to making sure that it is not isolated.”

To his credit, Obama provided a clear, well-argued and constructive definition of anti-Semitism.

But there’s a bit of a problem. Right after Obama provided us with his definition of anti-Semitism, he endorsed and indeed engaged in the very anti-Semitism he had just defined.

As Goldberg, who is sympathetically inclined toward Obama, put it, Obama “holds Israel to a higher standard than he does other countries.”

Both in his interview with Goldberg and in his speech at the synagogue, Obama judged Israel in accordance to what he defined as Jewish values.

According to Obama, Jewish values require Jews to prefer the interests of others over their own interests in order to “repair the world.”

As Obama reads Israeli history, the state’s founders didn’t only seek to build a Jewish state.

They set out to build Utopia.

Obama explained, “I care deeply about preserving that Jewish democracy, because when I think about how I came to know Israel, it was based on images of… kibbutzim, and Moshe Dayan, and Golda Meir, and the sense that not only are we creating a safe Jewish homeland, but also we are remaking the world. We’re repairing it. We are going to do it the right way. We are going to make sure that the lessons we’ve learned from our hardships and our persecutions are applied to how we govern and how we treat others. And it goes back to the values questions that we talked about earlier – those are the values that helped to nurture me and my political beliefs.”

In his address at the synagogue, Obama made his expectations of Israel explicit. As he sees it, Israel’s concerns for Palestinians should outweigh its concerns for itself.

“The rights of the Jewish people… compel me to think about a Palestinian child in Ramallah that feels trapped without opportunity. That’s what Jewish values teach me.”

In other words, when Obama thinks about Israel, he cannot avoid blaming Israel for the feelings he assumes Palestinian children feel.

It is important to mention that in neither of his attempts to address concerns about his perceived biases regarding Jews did Obama note the behavior of the Palestinian Authority. He ignored its endemic corruption and authoritarianism.

He ignored the wild anti-Semitic incitement and indoctrination practiced at all levels of the Palestinian governing authority. He ignored the longstanding Palestinian refusal to accept an independent state that would peacefully coexist with the Jewish state.

So in the end, Obama’s charm offensive did provide a clear answer to the question of whether he is anti-Semitic.

It bears noting that the fact that Obama failed his own test of anti-Semitism doesn’t necessarily mean that he hates Jews. It is certainly possible that he likes Jews.

But loving Jews and being an anti-Semite are not mutually exclusive.

Consider anti-black bigots. Over the years, plenty of racists have professed, and perhaps even felt, love for black people.

They discriminated against blacks not because they hated them but because they believed that blacks were inferior to whites. It was due to their “love” for blacks that they insisted on holding them to lower standards than whites, or on segregating them from whites, lest they be embarrassed or set up for failure.

In other words, the fact of their “love” didn’t make them less bigoted.

Likewise, the possibility that Obama loves Jews doesn’t make his compulsion to judge Israel by a separate standard from other states and nations, including the Palestinians, any less bigoted.

On the other hand, both in his interview with Goldberg and in his speech at Adas Israel, Obama gave reason for concern that he harbors little goodwill for Jews or sensitivity to the unique dangers they face.

Goldberg raised the concern that the anti-Semitism at the heart of the world view of Iran’s dictator Ali Khamenei makes him irrational. Obama didn’t merely reject the notion, while denying the long history of eliminationist anti-Semitism, Obama rejected the notion that anti-Semitism can outweigh rational interests like regime survival and economic prosperity.

In his words, “Well the fact that you are anti-Semitic, or racist, doesn’t preclude you from being interested in survival. It doesn’t preclude you from being rational about the need to keep your economy afloat; it doesn’t preclude you from making strategic decisions about how you stay in power; and so the fact that the supreme leader is anti-Semitic doesn’t mean that this overrides all of his other considerations.”

If that wasn’t enough to show that Obama rejects the notion that anti-Semitism can and often does serve as the deranged anchor of policy- making by anti-Semites, he proceeded to equate Iran’s annihilationist anti-Semitism with the country club anti-Semitism American Jews once were subjected to by their fellow Americans.

“If you look at the history of anti-Semitism…there were deep strains of anti-Semitism in this country,” he said.

By rejecting the policy significance of anti-Semitism for the Iranian regime, Obama exhibited yet another anti-Semitic behavior. Obama asserted that if you fail to recognize the danger that anti-Semitism constitutes for Israel’s survival, then you are an anti-Semite.

Obama’s statements about the Palestinians also indicate that he feels little love for Jews. As has been his consistent practice since assuming office, in his charm offensive last week, Obama continued to ignore the fact that if the Palestinians were primarily interested in a state, rather than in the destruction of the Jewish state, they could have had one at almost any time since the release of the Peel Commission report in 1937 that first suggested partitioning the land west of the Jordan River between a Jewish and an Arab state. His consistent refusal to deal with this simple fact, and his insistence on blaming Israel for the Palestinians’ expressed misery despite Israel’s repeated offers to partition the land in exchange for peace raise serious questions about his intentions toward the Jewish state.

As Obama rightly understands, in the coming months, as he tries to sell his nuclear deal with Iran and his anti-Israel positions at the UN to the American public, the question of whether or not he is an anti-Semite will become more salient than ever before.

Now that he has answered the question, Israel needs to act in accordance with Jewish values, and choose life even at the expense of good relations with the Obama administration.

Antonio Prohías (17 de enero de 1921, Cienfuegos, Cuba – 24 de febrero de 1998, Miami, Estados Unidos) fue un caricaturista cubano. Recordado por ser el autor de la tira cómica Spy vs. Spy (1961-1990) para la revista MAD.

Carrera

A fines de la década de 1940 comenzó a trabajar como caricaturista en el periódico El Mundo. Entre sus tiras cómicas destacan El Hombre Siniestro, La Mujer Siniestra, Tovarich, El diplomático, Erizo y Oveja negra, que fueron publicadas mayormente en Cuba. Ya para fines de la década de 1950, era el presidente de laAsociación de Caricaturistas de Cuba y considerado como un caricaturista político reconocido internacionalmente.

Con el triunfo de la Revolución cubana, y siendo opositor al nuevo régimen, decidió abandonar Cuba el 1° de mayo de 1961 y mudarse a Nueva York con su hija Marta. Sin saber inglés, su hija lo ayudó como traductora cuando se dirigió a la revista MAD para buscar un trabajo allí. Encontrándose sin dinero, tuvo que trabajar en una fábrica de ropa por las noches para mantenerse.

Pronto fue contratado por MAD, comenzando con su más famosa caricatura Spy vs. Spy, que en un comienzo tuvo un sentido político contrarrevolucionario hacia el gobierno de Cuba, correspondiente a la llamada Guerra Fría, pero que siguiendo el estilo de humor negro de MAD, se fue transformando en una tira cómica que reflejaba las confrontaciones entre Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética y posteriormente en una popular tira de humor negro. Aparte de Spy vs. Spy, Prohías también aportó con aproximadamente 270 otras contribuciones. Siguió trabajando en MAD hasta su retiro en 1990, por enfermedad. Su retiro no significó el fin deSpy vs. Spy, la que siguió siendo dibujada por George Woodbridge, Bob Clarke y Duck Edwing (1988), Dave Manak en la década de 1990, y desde 1997 por Peter Kuper.

Falleció a los 77 años de edad en Miami, y se encuentra sepultado en el cementerio y mausoleo Caballero Rivero Woodlawn North Park de la misma ciudad.  Ganó seis veces el premio Juan Gualberto Gomez (El premio más prestigioso de la caricatura en Cuba).

A man out for a walk with his dog….

A man out for a walk with his dog last week was gunned down by three black teens. And when police found the man's body, they made a heartbreaking find right next to him.    As NBC Philadelphia reported, the three black teens got "bored" playing basketball and decided to go rob someone. After seeing one man with a large dog, and deciding not to rob him, they then saw 51-year-old James Patrick Stuhlman walking his terrier. Stuhlman typically walked his dog with his 13-year-old daughter. But on the night of his murder, March 12, he had told her to stay home because it was getting dark out, which very likely saved her life.  As he walked down the street, Stuhlman, who owned a local landscaping company, saw three teens approach him. Then they grabbed and robbed him, and shot him once in the leg. They could have just taken his money and ran at that point. But they did not.  "At one point, he did plead for his life, " Captain James Clark said Thursday at a news conference, according to the New York Daily News. "He said, 'Please don't shoot me, please don't shoot me,' and they still shot him one more time."  That second shot took his life.  So "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" really did happen - not in Ferguson - but in a Black-on-White capital murder in Philadelphia.  So can we expect Barack Obama and Eric Holder to demand a civil right investigation? Don't bet on it. Police have arrested 15-year-old Brandon Smith. They also arrested a 14-year-old whose name has been withheld - because he is supposedly a "child.".  They said they decided to rob Stuhlman because his dog was smaller than their intended first target. The shooter who gunned down this father in cold blood, 15-year old Tyfine Hamilton, is "still at large". Philadelphia police consider him "armed and dangerous."  Smith has been charged in relation to the murder and is still in custody. But the unnamed teen was inexplicably just charged with robbery despite being an accessory to murder. Police are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Hamilton.  Typically, the teens have all been in trouble with the law in the past. It is stunning at what early age vicious murderers are now made. 15? Unbelievable.  Capt. Clark warned Hamilton at a press conference: "Get with your parent and turn yourself in before we come and get you…We know where you are."  Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker said that when police arrived at the scene Stuhlman was laying in a pool of blood and was already unresponsive. The family man still had his flashlight in his hand.  But what police found next to him was heartbreaking. His dog was pawing him, sniffing at his face, and whimpering. "The dog was lying next to him - appeared to be scared and in shock," Walker said.  "His daughter goes for a walk with him almost every night," Clark said. "For whatever reason, he said to her, 'it's a little late tonight I don't want you walking with me.' So in effect, he may have saved his daughter's life." Thank God he did, but that is small consolation for the young girl who is now without a father, and will forever fear walking at dusk, thanks to the savage brutality these young monsters inflicted on her own dad.  Author's personal note: I don't usually do this, but feel I must. The media is censoring this story. You know why. They made the Michael Brown fraud front page news for months. But they will bury this REAL "Hands up, Don't Shoot" horror. *¿Que viene Elián? ¿A mí qué me importa? ¿Qué importancia puede tener lo que haga o deje de hacer, lo que diga o se calle ese pichón de rufo? Con la herencia genética que se gasta, con ese padre y esas abuelas, ¿qué tiene de particular que haya dicho que Esteban Dido es su dios? Elián fue un error del exilio, un desperdicio de solidaridad, la misma solidaridad que se les ha negado a otros que la merecían más. *¿Sabe usted lo que son 22 trillones? Yo no. Semejante cifra no me cabe en la cabeza. En todo caso, eso es lo que se ha gastado en la Guerra contra la Pobreza de la población negra, pobreza que parece aumentar en lugar de disminuir. A más welfare, más pobreza. *Con su habitual desfachatez, Barack Hussein Obama critica a las escuelas privadas, lo cual no le impide pagar $40,000 al año a la escuela cuáquera Sidwell Friends por la educación de sus hijas, con lo cual evita que las niñas se mezclen con los negritos hijos de padres ausentes que pueblan los guetos del Distrito de Columbia. *Para ser blanco no hay que ser rubio, pero las únicas personas no blancas que tienen el pelo rubio o al menos castaño claro son esos mulatos con un alto porcentaje de genes blancos que los cubanos llamamos “jabaos”. Por eso, por ser una característica de los odiados blancos, no entiendo por qué ciertos cultores de la negritud se tiñen las pasas de rubio. Tengo ante mí una foto de Angela Davis, la terrorista cómplice de una acción armada en la que fue asesinado un juez, tras la cual huyó de California, fue capturada tiempo después en New York, juzgada e  increíblemente absuelta; aquella bruja comunista con la que tanta lata nos dieron en Cuba. Ahí está, muy estropeadita, la pobre, y con su “afro” teñido de rubio. *Los Clinton, defensores de los pobres, han ganado 25 millones de dólares dando conferencias desde enero del 2014.¡Semejante millonada  por hablar! Ahora, díganme: ¿Les parece que tiene sentido pagarle 50,000 dólares a una persona, sea quien sea, por escucharle dictar una conferencia? Claro que lo tiene. Quienes hacen esos pagos, en apariencia absurdos, no está pagando por escuchar nada; están haciendo una inversión, comprando influencias. Un consejo (gratis): si quiere ser rico, haga como los Clinton, como los hijos de Lina Ruz, como Daniel Ortega, como los Kirchner y los bolivarianos: dedíquese a defender a los pobres. *Calgary es una ciudad de Alberta, Canadá, provincia rica en petróleo y ganadería. Allí se celebraba (ignoro si aún se celebra) la Cabalgata Anual, una especie de festival de cowboys. Allí nació Ted Cruz, que ojalá llegara ser Presidente. Allí ha sido elegido el primer alcalde musulmán, Maheed Kurban Nenshi, hijo de inmigrantes tanzanios. *¿Así que Mahmoud Abbas, el que preside la autoridad palestina en Judea y Samaria, alias Cisjordania, es un Ángel de la Paz para el Papa Francisco? Pues resulta que este angelical sujeto, graduado de la Universidad Patricio Lumumba, dedicada a la preparación de cuadros que tendrían a su cargo liberar al Tercer Mundo de la explotación, es miembro de Al Fatah, la organización terrorista que fundara y presidiera hasta su muerte Yasser Arafat. En su condición de tal participó en la financiación del secuestro y posterior asesinato de atletas israelíes durante la Olimpiada de 1978 en Munich y de la toma del Achille Lauro, el barco de recreo del que los asesinos palestinos (rima consonante) lanzaron al mar, con silla de ruedas y todo, a un  judío anciano y paralítico. Ese mismo angelical sujeto no acepta ninguna oferta de paz que no incluya un sector de Jerusalem para que sea la capital del Estado palestino. Esa ciudad cuya antigüedad  anda cerca de los tres mil años, jamás ha sido capital de un Estado árabe, sólo de los reinos bíblicos (David, Salomón), del que se originó en la rebelión de los Macabeos (Herodes) y del Reino Latino de los Cruzados. Ah, pero si al Angel de la Paz y a sus secuaces no les dan su pedazo de Jerusalem, no hay paz, el pedazo que les otorgaron las Naciones Unidas en 1948 y que ellos no aceptaron para lanzarse a la guerra contra el Estado judío; el sitio donde está el Monte del Templo con su Muro de las Lamentaciones, el lugar más sagrado del judaísmo, al que los judíos no podían acceder porque los árabes no se lo permitían; el que perdieron en otra guerra, la de los Seis Días, comenzada también por ellos. El Ángel del Papa Francisco tampoco acepta la existencia de Israel como Hogar Nacional Judío.      *¿Concordatos de la Iglesia con dictadores? No es lo mismo Franco, que derroto a los que asesinaron a miles de religiosos y quemaron iglesias, no es lo mismo ni  siquiera Trujillo, que los hijos de Lina Ruz, que expulsaron de Cuba a cientos de sacerdotes, robaron las propiedades de la Iglesia, fusilaron a miles que murieron gritando “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” e incluso intentaron prohibir la celebración de la Navidad. *Myriam Márquez, la directora de El Nuevo Herald, no se duerme en los laureles. Tampoco en los flamboyanes ni en los jagüeyes y mucho menos en las ceibas, que tienen espinas. Para escribir sobre Cuba tiene a Dora Amador, a Uva de Aragón, a Colachito Pérez, a Alejandro Armengol, a Oscar Peña, a Ariel Hidalgo, a Jorge Dávila y a Daniel Morcate. Casi na. Sin embargo, no le bastan; como Mick Jagger en los años 60’, she can’t get no satisfaction. Ahora ha incorporado a un señor que se identifica como “abogado cubanoamericano”, aunque parece llegado directamente de la redacción del Granma, órgano del CC del PCC. Es típico de esa gente atribuirle ideas absurdas e incluso estúpidas a sus enemigos (no les queda duda: nosotros los cubanos-cubanos somos sus enemigos) para luego refutarlas y pretender que nos han hecho quedar en ridículo. Por ejemplo, eso de que alguien del Metro Zoo tuvo que ir a La Habana para convencer a los de Miami de que no es cierto que en Cuba se pase tanta hambre que la gente se come a los animales del zoológico.  Piénselo: ¿Qué animales del zoológico son comestibles? Si usted tuviera hambre, ¿intentaría comerse un león, un tigre, un leopardo, un rinoceronte, un hipopótamo o una hiena? El hecho de que en el Período Especial en Tiempos de Paz algunos se comieran a los gatos, a los que llamaban “conejos tejanos” debido a su deambular por los tejados, no quiere decir que hubieran podido hacer lo mismo con un tigre.  De los animales de zoológico, ¿cuáles son comestibles? Vamos ver, dijo Homero: los cérvidos y las cebras, bestias veloces difíciles de atrapar y de transportar; los búfalos africanos, enormes y sumamente agresivos; y los cocodrilos, de los que sólo se puede aprovechar la cola y cuya peligrosidad es de todos conocida. El único animal de zoológico víctima de la perenne escasez (cuando la escasez es perenne la gente la llama hambre, aunque no sea lo mismo), fue un ñandú, ave corredora de las pampas argentinas perteneciente a la familia de los avestruces, que desapareció hace más de veinte años. Lo recuerdo porque fue tema del primer artículo que escribí cuando Álvaro Vargas Llosa me reclutó para la sección de Opiniones del Nuevo Herald. Como di por muerto al desaparecido y supuse que había ido a parar a alguna cazuela, lo titulé “La muerte del ñandú”. *Barajagua es un pueblito del valle de Nipe. Allí fue llevada la imagen de la Virgen de la Caridad que apareció flotando en la gran bahía y fue el primer lugar donde se le rindió adoración. Luego, por motivos que ignoro, la imagen fue trasladada a El Cobre. Fue la primera de sus vicisitudes; mucho tiempo después perdería su túnica blanca y su manto azul, sustituidos con ropajes amarillo-dorados, el color de Ochún, diosa yoruba de la promiscuidad sexual con quien la identifican los creyentes de la Regla de Ocha, también llamada santería y, por algunos, brujería.  Dicen que el Papa Francisco visitará Barajagua, lugar desconocido para la mayoría de los cubanos, aunque no para mí. Cerca de allí está el batey del central Báguanos, donde transcurrió mi niñez. Lo malo es que en las cercanías también está Birán, lugar de nacimiento de los dos sujetos más asesinos, ladrones y destructivos que jamás hayan gobernado la Isla de Cuba desde los tiempos de Diego Velásquez de Cuéllar. No quisiera creer que el Pontífice vaya de visita a tan nefasto lugar. No quisiera creerlo, pero lo creo; lo creo capaz de hacerlo. *¿Les parece que dedico un espacio excesivo al Papa Francisco, que todo lo que dice o hace me parece mal? ¡Es que me tiene la vida hecha un hollejo! Hasta la beatificación del arzobispo salvadoreño Oscar Arnulfo Romero me ha caído como una patada en los ijares. El arzobispo Romero fue asesinado por pistoleros derechistas mientras oficiaba misa. Una salvajada. Pero  eso no borra su solapada simpatía por las guerrillas comunistas del Frente Farabundo Martí, que competían con el ejército en eso de matar gente. Cuando monseñor Romero hablaba de crímenes, siempre se refería a los cometidos por fuerzas del gobierno, aunque para asesinos, los del Farabundo. Tan asesinos eran, que se mataban entre sí. No puedo recordar el nombre del comandante guerrillero que asesinó a punzonazos a su amante, que también era guerrillera y comandante, cuando ambos andaban en no sé qué tenebroseo en la Nicaragua sandinista. Otro comandante, cuyo nombre sí recuerdo, Joaquín Villalobos, asesinó al poeta Roque Daltón, comunista desde el kindergarten, que había pasado casi toda su vida exiliado en Checoslovaquia y Cuba. Cuando Dalton se incorporó a la guerrilla, Villalobos lo asesinó; no sé por qué ni me importa, pero lo asesinó. El arzobispo Romero nunca elogió a los furibundos Farabundos, pero reservaba sus críticas para quienes los combatían. *Como es sabido, en los países situados al sur del río Grande y hasta el Cabo de Hornos, sin excluir Las Antillas, la culpa de todo la tienen los americanos. A continuación, el clamor de un mexicano furioso: -¡Pinches gringos! ¿Por qué no llegaron hasta Guatemala, desgraciados? Y si de clamores desesperados hablamos, ahí les va el mío: -¿Por qué renunciaste, Benedicto? ¿Por qué lo hiciste? ¡Nos has embarcado!
